Sponsorship and Advertising Policy
How we keep revenue separate from editorial judgment.
How we make money
MayorOfChicago.com is supported by clearly labeled sponsorships, newsletter and event sponsors, display advertising, research reports, data products, memberships, and donations. Every sponsored placement is labeled “Sponsored,” “Paid Advertisement,” or “Presented By,” depending on context.
What sponsors cannot do
- Select or influence a fact-check rating.
- Remove unfavorable content.
- Change candidate order.
- Review unpublished competitor material.
- Approve or reject public questions.
- Influence editorial endorsements.
- Purchase a favorable comparison result.
Political advertising
Candidate advertising is disabled by default. If it is ever enabled, it will only happen after legal review, and every ad will be clearly labeled as paid political advertising, identify the purchaser, and appear in a public advertising archive. Paid placements never appear as an organic candidate ranking and never imitate a news article without prominent sponsored labeling.
